Subspecies
Formerly separated in monospecific genus Osculatia. Apparently related to Purplish-backed Quail-Dove (Zentrygon lawrencii) and Buff-fronted Quail-Dove (Zentrygon costaricensis). Subspecies purpurata may represent distinct species.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
purpurata (Salvin, 1878) - North-western Colombia (north to upper Atrato Valley) south to north-western Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Purple Quail-Dove (Geotrygon purpurata).
saphirina Bonaparte, 1855 - Eastern Ecuador south to south-eastern Peru (Cuzco) and extreme western Amazonian Brazil (Amazonas); probably also south-eastern Colombia (Amazonas, Putamayo).
rothschildi (Stolzmann, 1926) - Known only from Cadena in Mareapata Valley (south-eastern Peru).
