Habitat
Undergrowth and forest floor of lowland and montane evergreen forests, and advanced secondary growth. From 600 - 1,100 m.

Range (Guide)
Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.

Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Status LC
Habitat destruction and degradation through deforestation as land is cleared for cattle ranching and soy production, facilitated by expansion of the road network, is the main threat.

Habits
Usually seen singly, or in well separated pairs.

Food
Probably seeds and small invertebrates.

Voice
A repeated, high-pitched 'ca-whoooo... ca-whoooo'.

Subspecies
Formerly separated in monospecific genus Osculatia. Apparently related to Purplish-backed Quail-Dove (Zentrygon lawrencii) and Buff-fronted Quail-Dove (Zentrygon costaricensis). Subspecies purpurata may represent distinct species.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • purpurata (Salvin, 1878)   -  North-western Colombia (north to upper Atrato Valley) south to north-western Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Purple Quail-Dove (Geotrygon purpurata).
  • saphirina Bonaparte, 1855   -  Eastern Ecuador south to south-eastern Peru (Cuzco) and extreme western Amazonian Brazil (Amazonas); probably also south-eastern Colombia (Amazonas, Putamayo).
  • rothschildi (Stolzmann, 1926)   -  Known only from Cadena in Mareapata Valley (south-eastern Peru).
