Habitat
Dry, coastal scrub-woodland, a sparse understorey of shrubs and saplings, sparse to absent ground-cover and much exposed soil, mixed deciduous/evergreen vegetation.

Estimated population is 50 - 249 (2010) and decreasing.
Status CR
Habitat loss due to clearing for residential housing, roads and other development, predation by introduced mongooses, cats, rats and manicous, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Has been considered part of a superspecies with Grey-fronted Dove (Leptotila rufaxilla), Grey-headed Dove (Leptotila plumbeiceps), Pallid Dove (Leptotila pallida) and Brown-backed Dove (Leptotila battyi), and all five have been considered conspecific. Also related to White-tipped Dove (Leptotila verreauxi).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Eared Dove (Zenaida auriculata) which is smaller, more uniform brown with dark eye and auricular mark, black spots on scapulars and no white in tail.
