Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Status EW
The last sighting in the wild was in 1972. Extinction was attributed to predation by cats, but human predation and habitat destruction from grazing sheep may have been important.

Voice
A hoarse cooing song, 'wah-ah ah ah ah ahh-ah'.
Subspecies
Has frequently been considered conspecific with Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura), but captive studies revealed distinct differences in visual displays and vocalizations, the two species mate assortatively in captivity. Hybrids produced by cross-fostering present species under Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura), with resultant sexual imprinting on the latter. Best considered to form a superspecies with Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) and Eared Dove (Zenaida auriculata).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) which is smaller and slighter and has a very different song.
