Mainly inland areas, including lightly wooded savanna, usually near waterways or dams.

Australia generally, except areas with high rainfall in the far south-east, north-eastern Queensland and the Top End. Absent from Tasmania.

Habits
In pairs or small parties of five or six.

Food
Seeds of grasses and herbaceous plants.

Voice
A musical, 'whoo', starting softly, lifting and strengthening, ending abruptly, 'whoo-whoo-whoo'. A quick 'woop'.

Nest
A frail platform of twigs, usually in a bushy horizontal branch, up to 7 - 8 meters above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
2; smooth, glossy, white; oval; about 31 x 23 mm. Incubation: 18 - 20 days; by both sexes.

Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 20 - 25 days.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • lophotes (Temminck, 1822)   -  Throughout much of Australia, including, eastern NT, Qld (except Cape York Peninsula), Nsouth-western (except south-east), northern Vic and WA (except central and northern regions) and coastal NT.
  • whitlocki Mathews, 1912   -  Central and northern WA, and adjacent regions of NT and SA.
