Subspecies
Has no obvious close relatives. It has been proposed that it may be intermediate in some respects between the Northern Band-tailed Pigeon (Patagioenas fasciata) and Red-billed Pigeon (Patagioenas flavirostris) superspecies. Formerly listed as Columba rufina.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
pallidicrissa (Chubb, C, 1910) - Southern Mexico (Chiapas and Veracruz) south to northern Colombia.
andersoni (Cory, 1915) - South-eastern Colombia and eastern Ecuador eastern across Venezuela and Brazil north of Amazon to Pará.
tobagensis (Cory, 1915) - Trinidad and Tobago.
cayennensis Bonnaterre, 1792 - Guyana, Surinam and French Guiana.
sylvestris (Vieillot, 1818) - Eastern Peru and Brazil south of Amazon to Paraguay, northern Argentina and Uruguay.
occidentalis (Stolzmann, 1926) - Western Colombia, western Ecuador.
