Habitat
Subtropical and tropical high altitude grassland. From 600 - 2,000 m.

Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Niger.

Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • sharpei Alexander, 1901   -  Guinea and northern Sierra Leone east to western Nigeria, western Cameroon, northern Equatorial Guinea and central Central African Republic.
  • pallidogriseus Parker, RH & Benson, 1971   -  Nigeria (perhaps on Jos Plateau).
  • tristigma Rüppell, 1840   -  Ethiopia, southern Sudan and north-eastern Zaire south to Burundi and northern Tanzania.
  • lentiginosus Smith, A, 1845   -  Western Angola, north-western and west-central Namibia and western South Africa.
  • granosus Clancey, 1965   -  South-eastern Zaire, Zambia and southern Tanzania south to central-northern and eastern South Africa.
