Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry grassland and shrubland, hot desert. From sea-level - 600 m.
Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Sudan.
Vagrant to Nigeria.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- simplicior Hartert, 1921 - Southern Mauritania and northern Senegal east to central Chad.
- eximius Temminck, 1826 - Central Sudan.
