Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland and shrubland, temperate grassland.

Vagrant to China (mainland), Denmark, Eritrea, Germany, Italy, Malta, Niger, Somalia, Sweden, Syrian Arab Republic, Togo, United Kingdom.

Unknown to Western Sahara.

Subspecies
Asian populations (east of Syria) sometimes separated as subspecies arenicolor, but variation is clinal, with birds increasing in size towards east.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • saharae Erlanger, 1899   -  Central and east-central Morocco, northern (and occasionally south) Algeria, central Tunisia, probably north-western Libya, and possibly eastern towards northern Egypt. Winters in western Sahel.
  • aegyptius Lichtenstein, 1823   -  North-eastern Egypt and northern Arabian Peninsula, east to extreme central-western China, north-eastern Kazakhstan, Tadjikistan, extreme western Pakistan and south-eastern Iran. Winters in eastern Sahel.
