Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland. From sea-level - 3,200 m.
Angola, Botswana, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Zambia, Zimbabwe.
Vagrant to Burundi, Uganda.
Patchily from Ethiopia and north-western Somalia south to north-eastern Tanzania.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Rufous-cheeked Nightjar (Caprimulgus rufigena ) and European Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus ), and formerly considered conspecific with Rufous-cheeked Nightjar (Caprimulgus rufigena ). In the past, birds of Kenya occasionally separated as subspecies keniensis , but probably not sufficiently distinct.
