Male territorial call is a rapid 'tuctuctuctuctuctuctuc...' in bursts of up to 16 notes, repeated monotonously after short pauses. Also a fast, deep 'quor-quor-quor'.

Does not breed in Australia. Breeds in Siberia, Ussuriland, north-eastern Pakistan, Indian subcontinent, Asia (March - July).

1 - 2; creamy-white, spotted and marbled greyish-brown, dark grey and umber; oval; 30 x 22 mm.
Subspecies
Sometimes reckoned to be an eastern counterpart of European Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus).
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
hazarae Whistler, 1935 - North-eastern Pakistan eastern across Himalayas to north-eastern India, Bangladesh and southern China (Yunnan), south through Myanmar and Malay Peninsula. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Grey Nightjar (Caprimulgus jotaka).
indicus Latham, 1790 - India south of Himalayas (absent western Rajasthan and Kachchh).
kelaarti Blyth, 1851 - Sri Lanka.
jotaka Temminck and Schlegel, 1847 - South-eastern Siberia, east, central and southern China, Japan and Korea. Winters from southern China to Greater Sundas and Philippines. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey Nightjar (Caprimulgus jotaka).
phalaena Hartlaub and Finsch, 1872 - Palau Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Palau Nightjar (Caprimulgus phalaena).
