Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Horsfield's Frogmouth (Batrachostomus javensis) by some, but a combined study of vocalizations and museum specimens in 1978 confirmed earlier ideas that the two should be regarded as separate species. Recent suggestion that a population of small Batrachostomus in Palawan ("chaseni") may be a subspecies of present species appears to be without foundation, since chaseni is best regarded as a synonym of subspecies affinis of Horsfield's Frogmouth (Batrachostomus javensis).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
cornutus (Temminck, 1822) - Sumatra, Bangka and Belitung to Borneo and Banggi I (off northern Borneo).
longicaudatus Hoogerwerf, 1962 - Kangean Is (Neast of Java).
