Subtropical and tropical lowland seasonally wet / flooded grassland. From sea-level - 1,400 m.

Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay (B), Venezuela.

Subspecies
Subspecies forbesi sometimes merged with nominate.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • forbesi (Lowery & Dalquest, 1951)   -  Southern Mexico to Panama.
  • clamator (Vieillot, 1807)   -  Colombia and Venezuela south to eastern Peru and central and north-eastern Brazil.
  • oberi (Kelso, EH, 1936)   -  Tobago and north-eastern Trinidad.
  • midas (Schlegel, 1862)   -  Eastern Bolivia and southern Brazil south to northern Argentina and Uruguay.
