Subspecies
Sometimes considered to form superspecies with Eurasian Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium passerinum), Collared Owlet (Glaucidium brodiei), Pearl-spotted Owlet (Glaucidium perlatum), Northern Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium californicum), Mountain Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium gnoma) and Guatemalan Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium cobanense), but DNA evidence clearly shows that Eurasian Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium passerinum) and Northern Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium californicum) are not closely related.
Formerly treated as subspecies of Mountain Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium gnoma); recently split on basis mainly of vocalizations.
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Mountain Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium gnoma).
No subspecies.
