Subspecies
Siberian populations, formerly separated as pallasi, included in nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

ulula (Linnaeus, 1758) - Northern Eurasia east to Kamchatka and Sakhalin, central Siberia south to Tarbagatay.
tianschanica Smallbones, 1906 - Central Asia and north-western and north-eastern China, possibly also northern Mongolia.
caparoch (M�ller, PLS, 1776) - Alaska through Canada to Newfoundland, south to extreme northern USA.
