Habitat
Tall closed-canopy rainforest, not semi-evergreen open-canopy forest. Has never been recorded outside forest or forest clearings.
Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Liberia.
Liberia, Ivory Coast and Ghana; and patchily from southern Cameroon and northern Gabon to eastern Zaire.

Habitat loss through timber harvesting is the main threat.

Subspecies
Affinities uncertain. Sometimes suggested that genus be merged with Neotropical Lophostrix. However, superficial similarities in appearance and similar ecology probably due to convergent evolution.
