Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, lowland dry shrubland, dry savanna, plantations. From sea-level - 3,700 m.

Subspecies
Birds from Sokoke Forest in Kenya sometimes separated as subspecies sokokensis; populations described from Central African Republic to Sudan and southern Zaire (as bohndorffi) considered not separable from other subspecies.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • nuchalis (Sharpe, 1870)   -  Senegambia east to southern Sudan and Uganda, south to northern Angola and Zaire (except southern and east), including Bioko I.
  • umbrina (Heuglin, 1863)   -  Ethiopia and south-eastern Sudan.
  • nigricantior (Sharpe, 1897)   -  Southern Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar and eastern Zaire.
  • woodfordii (Smith, 1834)   -  Southern Angola and southern Zaire east to south-western Tanzania, south to northern Botswana and the Cape.
