Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Black-and-white Owl (Ciccaba nigrolineata), and sometimes treated as conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
huhula (Daudin, 1800) - Eastern Colombia, southern Venezuela and the Guianas to north-eastern Brazil, south to eastern Peru, north-western Argentina, northern Paraguay and eastern Brazil.
albomarginata (von Spix, 1824) - South-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
