Subspecies
Population from Kentei Mts, in northern Mongolia has been separated as subspecies elisabethae, but doubtfully separable from lapponica.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

nebulosa Forster, 1772 - North America, from central Alaska east to south-western Quebec, south to east-central California, northern Idaho and north-eastern Minnesota.
lapponica Thunberg, 1798 - Eurasia, from Fenno-Scandia east to western Koryakland, south to Lithuania, northern Mongolia, north-eastern China and northern Sakhalin.
