Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, dry grassland, high altitude grassland and shrubland, dry savanna, urban areas. From 2,000 - 4,200 m.

Range (Guide)

Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland (B), Tanzania [United Republic of], Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Lesotho, Malawi.

Subspecies
Formerly thought to form a superspecies with Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo). Subspecies mackinderi has been considered a full species.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

dillonii Des Murs & Pr�vost, 1846 - Southern Eritrea and Ethiopian Highlands.
mackinderi Sharpe, 1899 - From west-central Kenya south to Zimbabwe and western Mozambiqe.
capensis Smith, 1834 - South Africa and extreme southern Namibia.
