South-eastern Brazil (Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul), north-eastern Argentina (Misiones) and Uruguay.

Subspecies
Perhaps a member of a superspecies, along with Guatemalan Screech-Owl (Megascops guatemalae), Vermiculated Screech-Owl (Megascops vermiculatus), Yungas Screech-Owl (Megascops hoyi) and Black-capped Screech-Owl (Megascops atricapilla). Formerly considered conspecific with Black-capped Screech-Owl (Megascops atricapilla), but vocally and morphologically distinct.
