North-eastern Colombia to northern Venezuela and the tepuis of southern Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and adjacent Brazil. Also eastern slope of the Andes from Colombia to Bolivia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Vermiculated Screech-Owl (Megascops vermiculatus).

Subspecies
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Vermiculated Screech-Owl (Megascops vermiculatus).
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
roraimae (Salvin, 1897) - North-eastern Colombia to northern Venezuela and the tepuis of southern Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and adjacent Brazil. Also eastern slope of the Andes from Colombia to Bolivia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Vermiculated Screech-Owl (Megascops vermiculatus).
pallidus (Hekstra, 1982) - Coastal mountains of northern Venezuela.
napensis (Chapman, 1928) - Andean foothills of Venezuela, eastern Colombia and eastern Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Rio Napo Screech-Owl (Megascops napensis).
helleri Kelso, L, 1940 - Tropical eastern Peru.
bolivianus Bond & Meyer de Schauensee, 1941 - Tropical northern Bolivia (Cochabamba).
