Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.

Cordillera del Cutucú in south-eastern Ecuador south to La Peca region in north-western Peru.

Subspecies
Possibly forms superspecies with Cloudforest Screech-Owl (Megascops marshalli) and both formerly included under invalid name Otus huberi. Alternatively, considered by some to be conspecific with Rufescent Screech-Owl (Megascops ingens) or Colombian Screech-Owl (Megascops colombianus). Scientific name sometimes incorrectly spelt as peterseni.

No subspecies.
