North-western Peru (probably from around Amazonas, and Ancash south to Lima, possibly farther south, to Ayacucho or beyond); apparently also west-central Bolivia (to La Paz). Distributional limits very imperfectly known.

Subspecies
Originally described as subspecies of Tropical Screech-Owl (Megascops choliba), but distinctly different in morphology. Taxonomy requires further study to clarify true relationships. Species name sometimes incorrectly spelt koepckei.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
koepckeae Hekstra, 1982 - North-western, central Peru.
hockingi Fjeldså et al., 2012 - InterAndean valleys of central Peru.
