Subspecies
Probably forms superspecies with Mentawai Scops-Owl (Otus mentawi), Indian Scops-Owl (Otus bakkamoena), Collared Scops-Owl (Otus lettia), Japanese Scops-Owl (Otus semitorques), Palawan Scops-Owl (Otus fuliginosus) and Luzon Lowland Scops-Owl (Otus megalotis). Frequently treated as subspecies of Indian Scops-Owl (Otus bakkamoena), and sometimes considered to include as subspecies or to be conspecific with Collared Scops-Owl (Otus lettia), but vocalizations distinct. Subspecies cnephaeus apparently differs vocally, may be separate species. Subspecies condorensis doubtfully distinct from nominate.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • condorensis (Horsfield, 1821)   -  Southern peninsular Thailand below Isthmus of Kra.
  • lempiji (Horsfield, 1821)   -  Malay Peninsula (except south), southern Sumatra, Bangka, Belitung, Java, Bali, northern Natuna Is, Borneo (except north).
  • cnephaeus Deignan, 1950   -  Southern Malay Peninsula.
  • hypnodes Deignan, 1950   -  Northern and central Sumatra.
  • lemurum Deignan, 1957   -  Northern Borneo.
  • kangeanus Mayr, 1938   -  Kangean Is.
