Subspecies
Probably forms superspecies with Anjouan Scops-Owl (Otus capnodes), Moheli Scops-Owl (Otus moheliensis) and Madagascar Scops-Owl (Otus rutilus). Often considered subspecies of Madagascar Scops-Owl (Otus rutilus), but clear differences in vocalizations, morphology and habitat preferences indicate separate species.
