Subspecies
Probably forms superspecies with Ryukyu Scops-Owl (Otus elegans) and Sulawesi Scops-Owl (Otus manadensis). Original specimens, collected in 1866 and 1867, thought to be same species as Sulawesi Scops-Owl (Otus manadensis). Subsequent authors placed it very tentatively with Moluccan Scops-Owl (Otus magicus), though without critical examination of specimens, and more recently again with Sulawesi Scops-Owl (Otus manadensis), still without real knowledge of vocalizations or morphology. Later, in 1996, photographs and taped vocalizations revealed some differences from both Sulawesi Scops-Owl (Otus manadensis) and Moluccan Scops-Owl (Otus magicus). Despite strong similarities with some individuals of Sulawesi Scops-Owl (Otus manadensis), sufficient and constant morphological and vocal differences support treatment as separate species.
