Subspecies
Probably forms superspecies with Enggano Scops-Owl (Otus enganensis) and Nicobar Scops-Owl (Otus alius). Previously considered subspecies of either Eurasian Scops-Owl (Otus scops) or Oriental Scops-Owl (Otus sunia). Sometimes treated as conspecific with Enggano Scops-Owl (Otus enganensis), but vocalizations apparently very different.
No subspecies.
