Habitat
Primary and tall secondary forest, including logged forest and peat-swamp forest. From sea-level - 600m, occasionally up to 1,000 m.

Brunei Darussalam (B), Indonesia (B), Malaysia (B), Philippines, Thailand (B).

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through logging and land conversion is the main threat.

Subspecies
Relationships unclear. Additional subspecies burbidgei based on single dark-faced specimen from Sulu Is, in Philippines, but record apparently not accepted as origin of specimen disputed. Description also thought possibly not outside normal variation of nominate subspecies.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

malayensis Hachisuka, 1934 - Southern peninsular Thailand and peninsular Malaysia.
rufescens (Horsfield, 1821) - Sumatra, Bangka, Java and Borneo.
