Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Masked Owl (Tyto novaehollandiae), Manus Masked Owl (Tyto manusi), Lechuza de las Tanimbar (Tyto sororcula), Golden Masked-Owl (Tyto aurantia) and Minahasa Masked-Owl (Tyto inexspectata). Until recently, often considered conspecific with Minahasa Masked-Owl (Tyto inexspectata).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Brown Hawk-Owl (Ninox scutulata) which is smaller with yellow irides, streaked underparts and barred tail.
