Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Common Swift (Apus apus) and Plain Swift (Apus unicolor) and has been considered conspecific with both, and also with African Swift (Apus barbatus). Subspecies somalicus formerly considered to belong to Pallid Swift (Apus pallidus).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
niansae (Reichenow, 1887) - Eritrea, western Ethiopia, eastern Uganda, western Kenya and northern Tanzania; winter records from northern and north-eastern Zaire, north-western Tanzania, Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya.
somalicus (Clarke, S, 1919) - Northern Somalia and adjacent Ethiopia; some birds winter in Kenya.
