Subspecies
Separation into subspecies may prove to be unjustified.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
veraecrucis (Gmelin, 1789) - Eastern Mexico (Veracruz) to northern Honduras.
cayennensis (Gmelin, 1789) - Southern Honduras south through Central America, with scattered distribution in western Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, north-eastern Bolivia, Brazil, Venezuela, Trinidad and the Guianas.
