Subtropical and tropical high altitude shrubland. From 2,000 - 3,900 m.
Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Peru.

Subspecies
Proposed subspecies dinellii from Jujuy (north-western Argentina) now incorporated into nominate subspecies.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- parvulus (von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1892) - Western Andes of Peru to extreme northern Chile.
- peruvianus (Chapman, 1919) - Eastern Andes of Peru.
- andecolus (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Central Bolivia to western Argentina (Río Negro).
