Subspecies
Amazona autumnalis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was provisionally split into Amazona autumnalis and Amazona diadema by Stotz et al. (1996) but this treatment has not been adopted, following SACC (2005).

Forms superspecies with Lilac-crowned Amazon (Amazona finschi). Subspecies salvini (incorporating lilacina) and diadema may both be incipient species.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • autumnalis (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Caribbean seaboard and slope from eastern Mexico to northern Nicaragua.
  • salvini (Salvadori, 1891)   -  Northern Nicaragua south to south-western Colombia and north-western Venezuela.
  • lilacina Lesson, R, 1844   -  Western Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Lilacine Amazon (Amazona lilacina).
  • diadema (Spix, 1824)   -  Lower R Negro and adjacent northern bank of Amazon, north-western Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Diademed Amazon (Amazona diadema).
