Subspecies
Subspecies gracilipes of Culebra I, off Puerto Rico, now extinct.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
vittata (Boddaert, 1783) - Puerto Rico.
gracilipes! Ridgway, 1915 - Culebra I. Extinct.
Similar Species
Introduced Hispaniolan Amazon (Amazona ventralis) has a white forehead, maroon belly and blue in wing extends on to secondaries. Red-crowned Amazon (Amazona viridigenalis) has more extensive red on crown and red-orange wing-patch, but is very local around the coast and unlikely to occur sympatrically.
