Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 2,000 m.
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay.

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).
Status LC
Trapping for the cage-bird trade is the main threat.

Subspecies
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- maximiliani (Kuhl, 1820) - North-eastern and central-eastern Brazil.
- siy Souancé, 1856 - South-eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, central-western and central-southern Brazil and northern Argentina.
- lacerus Heine, 1884 - North-western Argentina in Tucumán, eastern Catamarca and southern Salta.
- melanoblepharus Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920 - South-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and northern Argentina in Misiones.
