Habitat
Mature montane cloud forest with a high occurrence of mistletoe, the berries being a key food source. From 2,610 - 3,600 m, but mostly 3,300 - 3,500 m.

Population
Estimated population is 50 - 249 (2010) and decreasing.
Status CR
Forest loss for cattle pasture and selective logging of mature trees for timber and firewood is the main threat.

Flight call is a gull-like disyllabic 'reh-enk'.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Rusty-faced Parrot (Hapalopsittaca amazonina) and Red-faced Parrot (Hapalopsittaca pyrrhops), and all have commonly been considered conspecific.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Subspecies velezi of Rusty-faced Parrot (Hapalopsittaca amazonina) which has more red on head, yellow streaking on sides of head and green hindneck concolourous with mantle.
