Subspecies
Commonly placed in genus Gypopsitta, on basis of bare head in adults, but this character is probably of little or no taxonomic significance. In other respects species clearly belongs in Pionopsitta and indeed may form a superspecies or parapatric species trio with Orange-cheeked Parrot (Pyrilia barrabandi) and Caica Parrot (Pyrilia caica).
