Subspecies
North-eastern Brazilian population, if proven racially distinct, must be known as chryseura (Swainson, 1820), not ruficauda Berla, 1954.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Brown-backed Parrotlet (Touit melanonotus) has a dark brown back and bright red sides of tail. Pileated Parrot (Pionopsitta pileata) is large and male has red on forehead.
