Southern Brazil and northern Paraguay. The part of Bolivia from which the type specimen came appears now to be in Paraguay.

Forest loss and degradation through agricultural expansion and charcoal production is the main threat.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Maroon-bellied Parakeet (Pyrrhura frontalis), and may be conspecific, converging on subspecies chiripepe, with which hybridizes in northern Paraguay.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Distinguished from Maroon-bellied Parakeet (Pyrrhura frontalis) by brownish crown, darker underparts, and particularly red and yellow underwing-coverts.
