Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Status EX
Common at the beginning of the 19th century. Audubon noted their decline, which followed increasing human settlement moving inland from the east. The last specimens were collected by Chapman near Lake Okeechobee, Florida, in 1904 (although rumours of its survival persisted into the 1930s). The last captive bird died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1918. Extinction was probably caused by persecution, deforestation and competition with introduced bees.
