A high, rolling 'cr-a ak'. Distant groups sound like Acorn Woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Thick-billed Parrot (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha), with which has often been considered conspecific.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Military Macaw (Ara militaris) which is larger, has longer tail and blue in flight feathers and rump. Thick-billed Parrot (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha) which is a similar green colour but is smaller, and has yellow in underwing, and red head markings.
