Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical and tropical dry shrubland. From sea-level - 1,200 m.

Aruba, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, French Guiana, Guyana, Mexico, Panama, Suriname, Venezuela.

Introduced to Barbados (B), Dominica (B), Guadeloupe, Martinique, Netherlands Antilles, Puerto Rico (PE) (B) (NB), Virgin Islands (British) (NB), Virgin Islands (U.S.) (B) (NB).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Cactus Parakeet (Eupsittula cactorum). Considerable geographical variation reflected in number of subspecies recognized, although some differences are minor and very possibly clinal in nature. Disjunct form ocularis sometimes treated as separate species.

The following 14 subspecies are recognised:

  • ocularis (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1865)   -  Panama.
  • aeruginosa (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Northern Colombia to north-western Venezuela.
  • griseipecta (Meyer de Schauensee, 1950)   -  Sinú Valley, north-eastern Colombia.
  • lehmanni (Dugand, 1943)   -  Eastern Colombia eastern possibly into western Venezuela.
  • arubensis (Hartert, 1892)   -  Aruba (Netherlands Antilles).
  • pertinax (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Curaçao (Netherlands Antilles).
  • xanthogenia (Bonaparte, 1850)   -  Bonaire (Netherlands Antilles).
  • tortugensis (Cory, 1909)   -  I Tortuga (Venezuela).
  • margaritensis Cory, 1918   -  I Margarita (Venezuela).
  • venezuelae (Zimmer, JT & Phelps, 1951)   -  Venezuela except north-west, possibly west, extreme north-eastern and south-east.
  • surinama (Zimmer, JT & Phelps, 1951)   -  North-eastern Venezuela and the Guianas.
  • chrysophrys (Swainson, 1838)   -  South-eastern Venezuela and adjacent Brazil.
  • chrysogenys (Massena & Souancé, 1854)   -  R Negro, north-western Brazil; possibly this form recently near Mamirauá Reserve on R Solimões.
  • paraensis (Sick, 1959)   -  R Tapajós and R Cururu, north-central Brazil.
