Habitat
Humid Atlantic coastal forest and inland transitional forests. Largely dependent on semi-deciduous forest, but forages and breeds in forest edge, adjacent secondary growth, agricultural areas and even urban areas. From sea-level - 1,400 m, occasionally up to 2,180 m.

Population
Estimated population is 6700 (2020) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction, degradation and fragmentation due to clearance for coffee, soybean and sugarcane plantations, trapping for the cage-bird trade, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Sometimes treated as conspecific with Sun Parakeet (Aratinga solstitialis) and Jandaya Parakeet (Aratinga jandaya), but perhaps better regarded as forming a superspecies with these forms.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
auricapillus (Kuhl, 1820) - Northern and central Bahia, central-eastern Brazil.
aurifrons von Spix, 1824 - Southern Bahia south to Paraná, eastern Brazil.
