Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, high altitude shrubland, dry and moist savanna. From sea-level - 600 m.
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay (P), Venezuela.
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and decreasing.

Subspecies
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
- koenigi (Arndt, 1995) - North-eastern Colombia and northern Venezuela.
- neoxenus (Cory, 1909) - Margarita Island (off Venezuela).
- haemorrhous (von Spix, 1824) - Interior north-eastern Brazil.
- neumanni (Blake & Traylor, 1947) - Upland eastern Bolivia.
- acuticaudatus (Vieillot, 1818) - Eastern Bolivia, Paraguay and south-western and southern Brazil to western Uruguay (extinct?) and northern Argentina.
- nigrirostris Arndt, 1996 - Isla Margarita (Venezuela).
