Wooded parks and suburbs.
Bangladesh (B), Bhutan, Cambodia (B), India (B), Laos (B), Myanmar (B), Nepal (B), Pakistan (B), Sri Lanka (B), Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).
Introduced to Afghanistan, Iran [Islamic Republic of] (B) (NB), Kuwait (B), Saudi Arabia (B), Turkey (B), United Arab Emirates (B), Yemen (B).
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).
Status NT
Trapping for trade is the main threat.

Subspecies
Some of currently accepted subspecies may be representative of clines, with subspecies nipalensis particularly weak.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- nipalensis (Hodgson, 1836) - Eastern Afghanistan and Pakistan east through northern India to Bangladesh.
- eupatria (Linnaeus, 1766) - Southern India and Sri Lanka.
- magnirostris (Ball, 1872) - Andaman Is.
- avensis (Kloss, 1917) - Assam (north-eastern India) and northern Myanmar.
- siamensis (Kloss, 1917) - Western and northern Thailand east to central Indochina.
