Isolated populations in southern Tanzania, north-western Mozambique and southern end of L Malombe, Malawi; south-eastern Zambia along middle Zambesi to northern Zimbabwe, where patchy. Introduced into eastern Zambia with escapes in southern Namibia.

Subspecies
Sometimes regarded as conspecific with Black-cheeked Lovebird (Agapornis nigrigenis) and also on occasion with Fischer's Lovebird (Agapornis fischeri) and Yellow-collared Lovebird (Agapornis personatus). Perhaps best considered to form superspecies with all three.
