Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical and tropical dry forest, dry savanna. From sea-level - 1,000 m.
Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Côte dIvoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo.
Introduced to Liberia.

Subspecies
Proposed subspecies mesotypus from eastern end of range appears indistinguishable from, or only a clinal end of, nominate subspecies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- senegalus (Linnaeus, 1766) - Gambia and Guinea-Bissau east to southern Niger, northern Cameroon and south-western Chad.
- versteri Finsch, 1863 - North-western Ivory Coast east to south-western Nigeria, south of nominate senegalus but north of rain forest belt.
