Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From 1,600 - 2,550 m, occasionally up to 3250 m.

Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], C�te dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda.

Subspecies
Forms a parapatric species pair with Cape Parrot (Poicephalus robustus). Birds of Kenya highlands formerly separated as subspecies permistus. Nominate subspecies includes doubtful subspecies aubryanus.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

fantiensis Neumann, 1908 - Liberia east to Ghana.
gulielmi (Jardine, 1849) - Cameroon south to Cabinda (northern Angola) and east to eastern Zaire and south-western Uganda.
massaicus Fischer, GA & Reichenow, 1884 - Western and central Kenya and northern Tanzania.
