New Zealand, formerly on North I, South I and Stewart I, with subfossil remains from Chatham Is; persisted until 1989 in Milford District of Fiordland in South I, and until 1992 on south-eastern Stewart I. Now survives as introduced populations on Codfish I, Maud I and Little Barrier I.
