Rare, but locally common. Semi-nomadic.

Habitat
Open eucalypt woodlands and forests having grassy or sparsely shrubby understorey.

Australia (B).

Population
Estimated population is 20,000 (2010).

Status LC
Probably secure. However, much of its habitat has been cleared for agriculture. It is also threatened by predation by fox and cats and inappropriate burning.

Habits
In pairs or small flocks.

Food
Seeds of native and introduced grasses and other herbs and weeds.

Voice
High, weak, musical, tinkling, 'tzeit-tzeit, tzeit-tzeit'. Faint high, twittering when feeding or at water.

Nest
In a hollow of a tree, stumps or fence posts.

Eggs (Guide)
4 - 5 or 6; white; rounded; 20 - 22 x 17 - 18 mm. Incubation: about 18 days; by female.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 28 days. They continue to maintan a loose association with their parents for some months.
